Changing Your Address Tips

When you move, let everyone know your new address.

They can nott send housewarming gifts if they don't know where you're moving! It's a great idea to send personalized cards to your friends and family so they can update their records it is also a good way to let them know how much you'll miss them. Leave a small welcome card with your forwarding address for the people moving into your old home. It's a nice way of asking for any additional pieces of your mail to be redirected.

Separately contact any business services you deal with.

Some companies will take your notification via the Internet, while others prefer your notification in writing due to privacy concerns. Be sure to tell them a couple weeks in advance in case they need to return your deposit or send you a bill.

As a safeguard against missing mail, notify the Post Office.

You can visit their website at http://www.usps.com/moversguide/. You can also change your address by visiting your local Post Office where you will fill out a copy of the 3575 form. It's a good idea to do this separately for everyone in your home. This will notify your old Post Office to forward any new mail to your new address. The process normally takes at least three weeks to take effect so plan ahead!

Remember to change your email address if you are changing jobs and rely on your work account for personal correspondence.

You can do this simply by sending a short email to everyone in your address book. Before doing so, you should create a free email account with one of the numerous email providers (such as Yahoo!, Hotmail or Excite). This will also allow you to keep in contact with friends and relatives while you get settled!
